Diamond Audio DES682 6x8 Coaxial Speakers Review: Pair with DES400.4D Amp for Next-Level In-Car Sound

Last month, I picked up the Diamond Audio DES400.4D 4-channel Class-D amplifier . I originally just wanted to add more power to my factory car speakers, but the sound quality improvement exceeded my expectations—the tuning style of the DES series is right up my alley. Since the amp was already in place, I decided to replace my factory speakers with the same series’ DES682 6x8 coaxial speakers  to complete a full upgrade. After two weeks of use, from daily commutes to weekend short road trips, this combo has completely changed my perception of in-car audio. Let me share my real experience.

First, the DES400.4D: A Solid "Backbone" for Speakers

Let me briefly talk about the DES400.4D I installed last month—it’s the key reason I chose the DES682. It’s a full-range Class-D amplifier with 4-channel output, delivering 140W RMS per channel at 4Ω, 170W RMS per channel at 2Ω , and it can also be bridged to 2 channels for 400W. The most practical feature is its compact size ( 11.81"x7.25"x2.0" ).  It also supports high and low-level inputs, plus three power-on trigger modes (VOX, DC Offset, REM), so it can be adapted to my factory head unit without extra wiring.

My biggest takeaway is its stable power and low distortion ( THD is only 0.07% ), with a damping factor (>250 at 50Hz@4Ω). When powering my factory speakers, the sound was cleaner and more dynamic, but the factory speakers’ quality still held it back—issues like muddy mid-bass and harsh treble weren’t fully resolved. Since the DES amp was so reliable, the same-series DES682 speakers naturally became my first choice, and I was eager to see what the full DES system could do.

DES682 + DES400.4D: Mid-Bass Finally Comes Alive

The first obvious change after installing the DES682 was the mid-bass. It features a composite foam-core carbon fiber cone , and paired with the DES400.4D’s ample power, the mid-bass is no longer the weak, muddy mess it was with the factory setup.

I listen to pop and rock during my daily commute, and the drumbeats and bass have a solid punch—powerful but not boomy—with no annoying resonance from the car doors. For vocal tracks, the singer’s lip smacks and breathing are clearly distinguishable, warm and transparent, so I no longer have to tweak the EQ repeatedly to find a balance. The DES400.4D’s high damping factor keeps the cone stable, making the mid-bass tight and snappy, with crisp rhythm—something my factory head unit and speakers could never deliver.

Crisp, Non-Harsh Treble: Aluminum Dome Tweeter + Amp Perfection

The DES682’s 25mm aluminum dome tweeter , paired with magnetic fluid cooling, delivers amazing treble when driven by the DES400.4D. Before, when listening to violin or female vocals with high notes, my factory speakers were either muddy and lacking detail or sharp and harsh. Now, it’s completely different—the vibration of the strings and the overtones of the treble are clearly presented, bright but natural, with no harshness at all.

The DES400.4D comes with a variable crossover from 35Hz to 350Hz , which perfectly matches the DES682’s frequency response characteristics. There’s no need for an additional crossover— the entire system can produce balanced three-frequency sound. Whether I’m listening to classical music on my commute or pop hits on road trips, the treble steadily supports the soundstage, connecting seamlessly with the mid-bass to enrich the overall sound layering.

Easy Installation: Same-Series Pairing = Simpler Tuning

One of the benefits of choosing the same series is smoother installation and tuning. The DES682 has a mounting depth of only 2. 18  inches  and a cutout size of 6.92×4.95 inches  / 176 x 126mm , so it can be directly replaced in the original position without drilling or rewiring—just as easy as installing the DES400.4D before.

During tuning, the DES400.4D’s variable crossover perfectly matches the DES682, allowing the entire system to produce balanced three-frequency sound. Additionally, the DES400.4D supports stable 2/4Ω output, so it’s flexible enough to power four-door DES682 speakers or be bridged for a subwoofer later—no need for repeated modifications, making it a one-and-done upgrade.

Wider Soundstage: Immersive Audio from the Full DES System

The DES682’s external 18dB crossover with RAF rear acoustic fill output , paired with the DES400.4D’s precise power, delivers unexpected soundstage performance. Before, music only felt like it was coming from the car doors; now, it fills the entire cabin, with balanced sound for both front and rear seats, creating an immersive experience similar to surround sound.

On weekend road trips with friends, everyone asks if I upgraded the audio as soon as they get in the car, saying it “feels like a small concert hall.” The DES400.4D’s low distortion and the DES682’s precise sound reproduction keep the entire system clear and resonance-free even at high volumes. When driving on the highway with music playing, wind and road noise are drowned out by the clear sound, which doubles the happiness of commuting and road trips.

Who Is This DES Combo For?

If you’re like me—a regular office worker who spends 1-2 hours commuting every day, wants to upgrade in-car audio but doesn’t want complicated modifications or wasted money—this DES400.4D + DES682 combo  is perfect. Start with the DES400.4D to boost power, then add the same-series DES682 speakers for a gradual upgrade, and you’ll feel a noticeable improvement every step of the way.

It’s ideal for car owners who value balanced sound, easy installation, and no hassle with complex modifications. It’s also great for road trip enthusiasts who want more high-quality in-car music. The tuning synergy of same-series pairing is unmatched by mixing different brands—you get great sound without repeated tuning.

For me, the DES400.4D + DES682 combo has completely solved all the problems with my factory audio—solid mid-bass, transparent treble, a wide soundstage, easy installation, and simple tuning. From installing the amp last month to replacing the speakers this week, every upgrade has exceeded my expectations, and the quality of the DES series is truly reliable. If you’re tired of lackluster in-car sound and want a hassle-free, reliable upgrade, this DES amp + speaker combo will not disappoint.
